According to ONU news, released on August 17, 2021, the World Meteorological Organization, OMM, releases a report “The State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean”, which highlights fires in the Amazon; 2020 was the second warmest year in South America.

The OMM survey also highlights that forest losses have contributed significantly to climate change, due to carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Between 2000 and 2016, nearly 55 million hectares of forests disappeared in Latin America, representing 91% of forest losses worldwide.
